Maths Curriculum

Mathematical skills and especially numeracy are basic skills and are therefore given a high profile on the curriculum.

The school scheme of work is based on Equals and the National Numeracy strategy.

It is the policy of the school to meet the needs of all the students, many of whom are working well below their chronological age. Many mathematical concepts are taught through cross curricular links with all subjects.

Some pupils follow the Equals scheme of work which offers an introduction to maths through sensory experiences.

The Foundation Stage pupils follow the Early Learning goals which include counting, measuring, comparisons, pattern making and problem solving. The work is mainly practical and involve songs and rhymes and play activities.

Key Stage 1 pupils follow the National numeracy strategy and remaining very practical whilst Key Stage builds on work from the previous years and contains more 2 recording.

Key Stage 3 continue to develop their mathematical understanding using the Key Stage 3 numeracy strategy which is adapted to meet their needs.

In Key Stage 4 there is more emphasis on time and money whilst working towards Edexcel Entry level.

Post 16 pupils continue work on Edexcel modules, key skills and practical application of number.

Students working at P4 and above are assessed annually on number and shape which then assists the teachers to set the next years targets.
